![]() ![]() There are 32 stadiums from around the world in which to play. Beyond those, classic teams can be unlocked. ![]() In the numbers game, Winning Eleven 9 boasts 136 club sides from the major leagues in Europe, as well as 57 national teams. All these touches seem like minor things at first, but after a while they prove to be masterstrokes of design. Hold R1 as the ball is passed to a player and he will feint, allowing the ball to skip past him and into the path of his run. The ball can even be swerved/curled if you hold R2 while directing the left stick. Shooting is less a game of chance in Winning Eleven 9: precision can now be applied far more easily with the analogue stick. If a player falls, he's more likely to be seriously injured. The pitch surface becomes icy and therefore more dangerous. Snowy conditions provide a new experience. Winning Eleven 9 is far and away the most detailed simulation of soccer to date. There are 70 variations on goal celebrations alone. ![]() Post-goal celebrations are true to life too - sometimes extravagant, and always fuelled with adrenaline. And if there's time for a fight, they'll try to kick it off. If there's some referee's decision that players can contest, they will. The revamped animation of players and 3D crowd scenes brings everything to life. The balance of play now favors the attacking side, and this results in fewer boring ties and a far greater number of end-to-end encounters. Previously, if you held the X button players would tackle and usually win possession of the ball, but now it's much more likely that holding X will cause your player to challenge using the upper body and thereby concede a free-kick to the opposition. Players' movement is also much more natural. Essentially, it's now easier to play well. When piecing together elaborate moves, it's easy to keep the flow of play running at a high pace. This affects the connection between boot and ball to such an extent that a simple kick is more satisfying and effective than ever before. It seems lighter now and bounces around more than in previous versions. Control of the ball is now much more realistic. And again, most of the improvements made directly enhance the (already excellent) gameplay. We didn't think it possible for Winning Eleven 8 to be significantly improved, but Konami's Tokyo unit has once again surpassed itself to deliver this superb title. Konami's annual update of its mighty Winning Eleven series this year raises the bar still higher. ![]()
